Former Borena zone was re-organized or re-classified into two zones, namely Borena and Guji zone at the end of 1994EC. Dama district is situated at a distance of 401km from Finfinne/Addis Ababa and 235km from the zone capital city of Nagele town.

 Dama district has an area of about 5329.1km²or 53291ha^. It is an area where mixed farming economic activities are major livelihood of the people. The expansion of social services, secondary economic activities and modern means of transportation and communication are in their early stage of development.
