Population:- The district had about 98,780 population, of which 76,851 were rural (37,11 females) and 21,933 were urban (10,932 females) populations Young, economically independent and old age populations accounted for 48.2%, 49.7% and 2.1% respectively. An average family size for rural area was 5.3 persons (1994 Population and Housing Census result). The crude population density of the district is estimated at 39 persons per km2.
Agriculture:- In the year under investigation, about 8.0%, 16.7%, 0.1% and 29.4% of the district’s total area were cultivated (all under annual crops), pasture, forest, and shrub and bush lands respectively, while the rest was attributed to barren, built-up and other areas. About 31 Farmers’ Associations and 4 Service Cooperatives with 15742 (2040 females) and 1,342 (345 females) member farmers respectively were found in the district. Average farmland and farm oxen holding sizes per farmer household were 1.3 ha and 1.0 ox. The most widely cultivated crops in the district are sorghum, maize, haricot bean, sesame and chickpea. On the other hand, stalk borer, grasshopper, weevils; rodents and termites are widely prevalent major crop pests in Mieso. Application of manure, chemical fertilizers, short fallowing and inter cropping methods are exercised to maintain soil fertility. About 2003 quintals of fertilizers (Urea was 1001 Quintals), 11 quintals of improved seeds and 27 liters and 75 kg pesticides have been utilized by about 0.42% of the total farmers in the mentioned year. There were 91072 cattle, 19318 sheep, 34803 goats, 8877 equines, 16356 camels, 54956 poultry and 183 traditional beehives in Mieso. The most widely prevalent livestock diseases are anthrax, blackleg, pasteurelosis, lumpy, and internal and external parasites. In the year under consideration about 71398 (35705 cattle) and 3556 (834 cattle) were vaccinated and treated against different diseases respectively.
Mining and Industry:- There were no hitherto known mineral deposits and mining activity in the district. Regarding industry, 16 flourmills and one metal work were available in the indicated year.
Trade and Tourism:-There were 169 registered business organizations (wholesalers, retailers and service renders) in the district. But there are no known local cash crops and income generating tourist attraction sites in the district. However, the district has fascinating natural landscapes, and cultural and historical sites for the development o tourist industry. Services: The district had about 50 km all weather and 26 km dry weather roads, 4 telephone stations and 2 agent post offices. The major source of drinking water in the district is pond, followed by tap water well, river and spring. Only about 22.2% of the district’s total population was supplied with potable water in the indicated year. The major source of domestic energy supply is agri-wastes, followed by firewood, animals dung, charcoal and kerosene. Hydro electric light services and 2 fuel stations were available in the district (at Mieso and Asebot towns). There were 18 elementary and 2 junior secondary schools with 5,981 students and 148 teaching staffs (44 females) in the district. Students’ participation rate in primary school was 28%. Similarly, 5 clinics and a malaria controlling center with a nurse and 17 health assistants as well as 2 veterinary clinics with 8 personnel were available in the district. There were no Bank and Insurance Organizations in the district.
Development Activities:- The constructions of one primary school and 2 DA houses were some of the known governmental ongoing development projects in Cieso district.
Problems and Potentials:- Deforestation, unreliable occurrence of rainfall, widely prevalent livestock diseases and crop pests, shortage of schools (mainly lack of senior high school), farmland, farm oxen, health institutions, veterinary services, water resources and backward infrastructure facilities are some of the major problems in the district. On the other hand, the district has fertile soil and favourable natural condition for livestock rearing.
