SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE OF YAYO HURUMU DISTRICT
Physical Characteristics:- The astronomical location of Yayo Hurumu district is 8o6’-8o32’N latitude and 35o7’-36o5’E longitude. The district with an area of 1353 km2 borders Mettu, Alge Sachi and Chora districts, Jimma zone and the Southern Peoples’ Regional State (see fig.). Plateaus with some river valleys make the major land features of the district. Geba is the only major river in the district. Saki, Enbo, Elemo, Wente, Feqi, Gojji and Biqila are some of the intermittent rivers in the district. Dega, Weina Dega and Kolla agro-climatic zones accounted for 10%, 40% and 50% of the district respectively. Yayo Hurumu is dominated by two soil types, namely Orthic Acrisols and Dystric Nitosols that cover 90% and 10% of the district respectively. The district is endowed with high and riverine forests. There are also small areas covered by man-made forests. Some evidences indicate that the district was once covered by vast forests in the past. The jungles of the district are inhabited by arboreal (tree animals) like apes and Colobus monkeys. Lion, buffalo, bush buck, bush duiker, wild pig, warthog, rabbit, civet cat and crocodile are some of the wild animals in the district. There are no parks, reserved areas or sanctuaries for wildlife conservation.
